Dear Readers,

There’s been no vacation time for the Agnitum team this summer. This month, we’ve launched a new version of our popular standalone spam filter, and we’ve received new awards and recognition, including a well-earned VirusBulletin 100% certificate. You’ll also find below an update on Outpost Pro 2009, with a reminder as to how you can upgrade to the latest Outpost protection. All this in Agnitum Directions for August 2008!

As always, we appreciate your feedback, so please use our web mail form or blog to send us your comments and opinions!

Agnitum breeds new free Spam Terrier 2.0 with The Bat! pedigree

This August we unleashed the brand-new, still free, Spam Terrier 2.0, which now protects users of Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Vista Mail and The Bat! from spam.

As with the previous version, Spam Terrier 2.0 is free to everyone and now provides even more wide-ranging protection for email, around the clock and around the globe. With the new support for The Bat!, we can confirm that Spam Terrier is going to bat for all email users, no matter what their outlook.

Spam Terrier offers a user-friendly interface and easy customization to help you get started with teaching the software your personal definition of spam. Then the self-learning engine, based on Bayesian principles, takes over, ensuring significantly fewer false positives and misjudged messages.

Spam Terrier is ‘behavior’-driven rather than the more typical criteria-driven approach of other anti-spam products. In other words: you can select what you consider spam and teach the product to recognize the specific behavior patterns of what constitutes junk mail for you.

The more you train Agnitum Spam Terrier, the better its nose for inappropriate mail. This is achieved through a system of “spam scores”, which classify a message as “not spam”, “probable spam” or “definite spam”. You can alter the principles for such classification in order to adjust the software’s level of tolerance for different types of message. But however “tolerant” the application may be, it will never let unwelcome guests in – Spam Terrier is constantly scanning new mail in search of fresh spam samples. Spam Terrier uses this data to update its database, increasing the accuracy level dramatically.

Spam Terrier not only barks when it spots spam, it bites fraudulent correspondence, too. With Spam Terrier to define white and black lists, as well as customized settings, you’ll never miss a valid message from a friend or colleague. And Spam Terrier will guide you through the easily-manageable interface and intuitive, convenient controls.

Spam Terrier is fully compatible with all Windows operating systems from 2000 onwards, including Windows Vista and its built-in mail client Windows Mail.

New support for The Bat!
After installing Spam Terrier, your The Bat! window will display two basic commands -"mark as spam" and "mark as non-spam", as well as the black/whitelist menu. These tools will help The Bat! users to easily define benign and malicious messages, ensuring that before long, spam will lose its way to the inbox.

New support for 64-bit Microsoft email clients
Spam Terrier 2.0 now supports all 64-bit email programs from Microsoft: Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

More effective filtering algorithm
By creating a structure of specific libraries of email samples, managing current statistics and archiving obsolete knowledgebase data, Spam Terrier 2.0 enables more accurate decision-making and avoids false positives, ensuring that legitimate email will always be delivered to your inbox.

Automatic base tuning
The Bayesian filtering principle implies training on an equal number of “bad” and “good” messages. However, in the majority of cases, your mailbox contains an unequal mixture of spam and legitimate messages, with either the former or – sometimes - the latter predominating. To avoid this bias impacting the engine’s learning efficiency, Spam Terrier 2.0 references an internal sample base in order to tune itself to provide greater accuracy moving forward.

Spam awareness evolves over time
As spam evolves, the product’s knowledgebase will ensure Spam Terrier 2.0 keeps pace with the changes. While it is strongly recommended that you train the filter from the start in order to maintain the accuracy of the filter, Spam Terrier also performs its own analysis of “new” and “odd” spam samples to extend and update the database.

Spam Terrier 2.0 is available now at no charge and can be downloaded from the Agnitum website at http://www.agnitum.com/products/spam-terrier/index.php. The product supports multiple email accounts in The Bat!, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, and Windows Vista Mail (both 32- and 64-bit) and is available in English, German, Spanish, French, and Russian.

Outpost Pro 2009 - so far, so good!

Outpost Firewall Pro, Outpost AntiVirus Pro and Outpost Security Suite Pro 2009 have been on the market for over a month now and all the signs so far are good!

The products are selling well, generating good media coverage, and, most importantly, getting positive user feedback! We’d like to thank our devoted beta-testers, fans and supporters for helping us get to this point – we couldn’t do it without you. By joining forces, we’ve delivered high-quality, lightweight, rock-solid solutions, and we promise to do more in the future!

Here’s a brief reminder of the 2009 features.

As with earlier versions, Outpost Security Suite 2009 is built around the Outpost firewall, with added anti-spyware, anti-virus, integral host protection, web control and anti-spam. Outpost Firewall Pro and Outpost AntiVirus Pro offer subsets of the suite’s functionality – both lack the antispam, the former lacks the antivirus, while the latter omits the firewall.

The new product line offers plenty of improvements, such as:

  • User interface and controls tweaks
Now protection status overview, basic/expert interface toggle, improved event logger manageability, and other functions are more flexible and easier to use.
  • Improved performance
Thanks to the SmartScan functionality, Outpost-protected PCs start faster, run faster, scan faster, and use fewer system resources.
  • Extended Host Protection
Built-in protection against the latest security breach techniques.
  • Protection against keyloggers Users are protected against the unwitting disclosure of personal information, including passwords and credit card numbers entered using the keyboard.
  • IP Blocklist keeps surfing clean Users can blacklist specified Internet domains and restrict incoming and outgoing traffic from sites with bad reputations.
  • Anti-spam supports The Bat! As with the standalone Spam Terrier 2.0, the anti-spam in OSS 2009 can now be integrated into The Bat! email client.

Outpost Firewall Pro, Outpost Antivirus Pro and Outpost Security Suite Pro 2009 are available for $39.95, $19.95 and $49.95, respectively. Current license holders for Outpost Pro 2008 products are eligible for a free-of-charge upgrade to the latest versions.

OSS gains VB 100% certification for accuracy and performance under Windows XP SP3

On August 1, 2008 the UK-based Virus Bulletin publication announced the results of the latest anti-virus tests on Outpost Security Suite Pro (ver. 6.0.2296.253.0490) and 34 other personal anti-virus and security suites running under Windows XP SP3. By achieving another VB 100% award from the experts at Virus Bulletin, Outpost Security Suite Pro clearly shows once again that it is fully compliant with today’s requirements for effective anti-virus protection.

According to Virus Bulletin, “the product ran smoothly and with rock-solid stability, racking up some reasonable if not superb scanning speeds, decent coverage of the trojan test set and no issues at all in the WildList or clean sets, thus easily qualifying for a VB 100 award”.

Thus Outpost Security Suite demonstrated great performance – one of our main goals throughout the development history of the product. Due to a number of measures, including SmartScan functionality, Outpost has shaped up as a quick and lightweight antivirus solution, evidenced by a number of positive independent tests and reviews.

"This latest VB 100 certificate proves that Outpost is not just a pretty face, but a powerful virus fighter. Just since March 2008 we’ve added over 250,000 malware signatures to the product and greatly improved the engine. All this contributes to Agnitum’s regular success in Virus Bulletin and other industry tests", comments Alexey Belkin, Chief Software Architect at Agnitum.

The VB100 award comes hot on the heels of another successful test carried out on July 3 and 4, 2008, when Outpost Firewall Pro 2009 scored 99 % in the Matousec Transparent Security (www.matousec.com) Firewall Challenge, beating out more than 30 competitors.

OSS 2009 highly rated by ComputerActive magazine

Aside from the VB 100 certificate and the high rating in the Matousec tests, Outpost Security Suite Pro continues to gather awards and positive feedback from the international media. The latest review also comes from the UK – ComputerActive magazine.

The ComputerActive reviewer gave his recommendation based on the interface improvements, the wealth of logging and tuning controls, and the abundant information on network activity for advanced users. The reviewer also liked the combination of antivirus and antispyware protection in a single module. Product performance was given a 5-star rating. And, last but not least, ComputerActive considered Outpost Security Suite great value for money! Check out the review on the magazine’s web-site - and take a look at the competitors’ results for a fuller picture.

In conclusion

We hope you’ve all had a wonderful and safe summer and you’re looking forward to new excitements in the fall as we start to think about the Christmas season. One thing’s for sure – you can rely on Agnitum to keep you safe online, no matter what you do, where you go, or how you celebrate the seasons!

With best wishes,
Your Agnitum team
