Agnitum Directions (March, 2007)
- Outpost Security Suite Pro: public beta release
- Spam Terrier: final release
- Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0: Dutch version
- DialStop plug-in: combating rogue dialers
Spring has come, and along with it comes long-awaited offspring. This March Agnitum announced two product releases: Outpost Security Suite Pro (public beta) and Spam Terrier. Our software architects have made great efforts to develop these applications to the fullest extent possible. Now it’s up to you to evaluate our activity and provide feedback. We are open to discussions, explanations and (God forbid!) complaints concerning the Suite, the antispam plug-in and whatever else comes to your mind. Please use our web mail form for your comments and suggestions.
Outpost Security Suite Pro: public beta release
Outpost Security Suite Pro — an all-in-one e-security solution featuring a personal firewall, an innovative antimalware engine (antivirus + antispyware), intelligent spam filter, and integral host protection — is now available for all users in the public beta version. You can download Outpost Security Suite Pro (public beta) via the registration form until the termination date of May 1, 2007.
There’s been a lot of discussion about the diverse capabilities of this product. We’ve also received lots of questions about specifics, such as the antivirus (AV) core that was implemented in Outpost Security Suite Pro. Who did we partner with? What can users expect from the embedded AV engine? Here are the answers.
The AV component of our antimalware module was licensed from the Hungarian vendor VirusBuster. This provider proved itself a reliable security defender, having received Virus Bulletin, ICSA Desktop/Server Anti-Virus, West Coast Labs and Checkmark Anti-Virus Level Two certifications. The core of this award-winning antivirus program was gradually enhanced by Agnitum’s software architects and tailored to the goals of our “all-in-one” product.
Strong antivirus comes hand-in-hand with Agnitum’s authentic spyware scanner. For two years now our developers have continued adding to the spyware database. Combining these two security measures increases detection rates dramatically, while scan speed stays fast. As a result the antimalware module is more powerful and efficient than separate solutions.
However, old friends and aged wine are best — so is one of the major contributions by Outpost Firewall to the Suite. We mean proactive defense functionality. No one can claim that rogue software has exhausted its strategies, but we have found the tool to preempt criminal efforts. Outpost Security Suite Pro keeps with tradition and favors a proactive approach to a reactive one.
Here are a few facts to remember:
- Outpost Security Suite Pro version is Windows XP-compatible (Vista-compatibility is our objective for the second half of the year);
- It’s incompatible with Outpost Firewall Pro for simultaneous use, as the firewall has become an integral part of the Suite; and
- Outpost Firewall Pro will remain Agnitum’s flagship product. We’ve never planned to cease its development and support. Product license holders can breathe a sigh of relief — we will maintain Outpost Firewall on the market for many years to come.
The final version of Outpost Security Suite Pro is anticipated at the end of spring 2007. We encourage you to communicate with us and let us know what we need to improve, enhance or clarify in the Suite so that we can take your wishes into consideration before the official release.

Spam Terrier — final release
Followers of Agnitum’s Security Tales may have noticed that our legendary hero, Outsmarter, has trained a smart pet — Spam Terrier. Out of his puppyhood and full of beans, this antispam assistant and mail guard has reached maturity. Spam Terrier is friendly with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, but his friend list could include other mail clients in the future. By nature, Spam Terrier is a benefactor, providing services free-of-charge. Apart from that, what’s so special about Spam Terrier in technical terms?
The Spam Terrier plug-in is based on the Bayesian core, which means that the program detects junk mail according to its ‘behavior.’ Users can train the application to recognize spam by marking fraudulent messages with a specific resolution. Spam Terrier solves rogue mail problems individually, allowing the user to make the decisions. In other words: you determine what is spam and what is not. Once you make a decision, the program ‘remembers’ your choice to avoid future mistakes. Thus, Spam Terrier educates itself to increase detection accuracy.
In addition, the program allows you to adjust sensitivity thresholds. Each incoming message is assigned a “spam score” by Spam Terrier; however, you can easily configure the tolerance level in accordance to your needs. And you don’t have to worry about losing benign messages. Suspected spam items are placed into a special folder; you can easily check it and restore any misclassified messages. There might be just one disadvantage: the ‘something’s-wrong-with-my-spam-filter’ excuse won’t work against your persistent boss any more!

DialStop plug-in — combating rogue dialers
The so-called Rogue Dialer or Trojan Dialer is a malicious program designed a few years ago with the aim of dialing premium numbers or placing long-distance calls that charge per-minute connection fees, provided the victim’s computer is equipped with a modem connected to a phone line. We dedicated a Security Insight article to this problem and related vulnerabilities: http://www.agnitum.com/news/securityinsight/issues/february2007 and came up with the solution to combat unauthorized dialers.
This solution — the DialStop plug-in for Outpost Firewall Pro — was developed by a third-party: Oleg Bil, an enthusiastic Outpost user. Thanks to Oleg, we’ve now disposed of a program based on a proprietary kernel-mode driver coupled with an adaptive algorithm for data analysis that allows reliable detecting and prompting before connection attempts.
The DialStop system is designed to operate under Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server platforms and is available for free from the Agnitum website as a plug-in for Outpost Firewall Pro.
