Outpost Pro 2008 product line for Windows Vista – it’s finally here!
Where & How?
On Tuesday, October 23, 2007 Outpost Security Suite Pro 2008 and Outpost Security Suite 2008 for Windows Vista (also compatible with Windows XP, 2003, 2000) were finally completed. We really appreciate all the assistance from our loyal users during the beta process – we couldn’t have done it without you! These products constitute a huge milestone for Agnitum as a company; we’ve invested many months of development and testing time to bring you the best possible security software. The firewall, indeed the entire security suite, were coded from scratch to ensure their smooth operation with Vista – everything was re-architected and redesigned. Now it’s time for you to judge if we have succeeded!
If you don’t currently have a licensed Outpost product:
The culmination of this effort is now available on our website. If you’re a firewall fan, go here to download a trial version of Outpost Firewall Pro 2008, or here to buy it right away for as little as $39.95.
If you’re concerned with all-round protection, you can download a trial version of Outpost Security Suite Pro or go right ahead and buy it for just $ 49.95.
In either case, you can download and use a full-function trial version for 30 days before making the final purchase decision. Special offers are available during this evaluation period, too. Buy before November 23 2007 and you can get a 2-year license for Outpost Firewall Pro 2008 or Outpost Security Suite 2008 for the price of one! Don’t miss your chance to get twice as much protection!
If you have a current or expired license for an Outpost product:
- Your registration status is active and your subscription has not expired
You can upgrade to the respective new product for free – just keep an eye out for product update alerts in your system tray. You can also choose to renew the license directly on our website.
Note that you cannot use this process to switch from Outpost Firewall Pro to Outpost Security Suite. They are two different products.
- Your registration status is expired
You can upgrade to the equivalent Vista-compatible product at half the price of your initial purchase. Follow this link to the Online Renewal Center to obtain the new firewall or all-in-one software, depending on your previous purchase.
Once you’ve made your decision, installing the new version is simplicity itself. Simply install the new product on top of the old one. The new software will detect older versions and transfer your existing settings to the new installation.
What & Why?
Now, about the products themselves. What’s new in Outpost Firewall Pro 2008 and Outpost Security Suite 2008?
Outpost Firewall Pro 2008, comprising the firewall and antispyware module, offer the following new functionality:
- Full Vista 32 and 64-bit platform support
The totally redesigned Outpost architecture means that the product is now compatible with Windows 2000 onwards, including XP, Vista and all 64-bit Windows versions.
- Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)
The new network connection protocol extensively used in Windows Vista, IPv6, is fully recognized and filtered. The protocol is the result of evolution from its predecessor, IPv4, and provides a number of scalability, automation and security benefits.
- Site blacklisting
As part of round-the-clock security services and together with virus and spyware signatures, Outpost now includes lists of harmful web sites (such as spyware sites, phishing sources and other ‘known-bad’ web properties) and prevents the user from visiting them. Agnitum’s database of malicious web sources is constantly being updated to the benefit of frequent surfers.
- Auto-learn function
Less-experienced users can make use of the new Auto-Learn function to run Outpost in “learning mode”, in which alerts are disabled for the first few days of use. During this period, Outpost quietly learns the user’s program activity and monitors connections. After this learning period, the firewall reverts to normal mode and prompts only when new, unrecognized activities are seen, leading to fewer alerts and less need for user interaction.
- Fast User Switching support
Complete Fast User Switching support provides more flexibility for all users on shared PCs.
- Remote Desktop connection
Outpost can be managed remotely over the Internet or a LAN using Remote Desktop connectivity.
- Web control module
The new web control module increases surfing safety by filtering for active objects on web pages, protecting users against inappropriate personal data disclosure, drive-by downloads, and offensive advertising.
- Stronger anti-leak technology
Outpost now supports advanced anti-leak techniques, based on the so-called kernel mode hooks.
- Known rootkit detection
As well as blocking zero-day attacks and other unauthorized inbound connections, the Host Protection module provides advanced protection against known botnets and rootkits. Protection is kept up to date through Agnitum’s automated update distribution service.
- New log viewer
The log viewer has been revamped to make it easier to import, process and maintain records of past activities. This new log functions much faster and is now accessible from within the main Outpost interface.
The new Outpost Security Suite 2008 builds on its firewall foundation, preserving the legacy of Outpost Firewall Pro’s battle-hardened pre-emptive protection, robust and flexible self-protection and exceptional usability. The suite adds a second – reactive – layer of defense: the fast and lightweight anti-malware engine helps keep viruses, Trojans, keyloggers and other malware away. The third line of defense is antispam; the dedicated Bayesian-based plugin for Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express keeps your inbox clean of unwanted mail.
In addition to all the firewall and anti-spyware improvements noted above, Outpost Security Suite Pro also offers:
- Scanning of email attachments in real time as they leave or arrive; suspicious file attachments are moved to the quarantine area for later review.
- Flexible scheduling for regular malware scans and setting custom scanning criteria, such as checking critical system areas whenever malware definitions have been updated.
Not just a product, but a complete security service
When you buy Outpost Security Suite Pro 2008, you get not only the suite itself, but also comprehensive maintenance and support services as part of your license fee. These services include:
- Daily anti-virus updates;
- Spyware definition updates;
- Firewall rule distribution;
- Application fingerprinting;
- Host Protection updates;
- Web site blacklist updates;
- Ad network updates.
Six around-the-clock services from Agnitum, plus free support from Agnitum experts, means you get – and keep – a clean computer completely automatically. Just do the math - $49.95 / 365 = $ 0.136 - the price of being totally protected with Outpost Security Suite Pro 2008 is just over 13 cents per day. We think that’s a great value, and we hope you agree!
Outpost Firewall Pro and Outpost Security Suite Pro 2008 are now available in English, French, German and Spanish, so check out your localized version.

Alexey Belkin, Chief Software Architect for Agnitum, shares his view of OSS 2008
We talked with Alexey Belkin, Chief Software Architect at Agnitum, to get his personal view of the finished product and his thoughts on the strategy behind Outpost Security Suite Pro 2008 for Vista.
Q.: Alexey, the first question concerns your personal opinion of the product. I know it’s hard to separate your job from your personal views, but still...
A.: Actually, it’s quite easy. I installed OSS 2008 on my Vista laptop about a month ago and I wouldn’t even consider going back to Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0!
Q.: What makes the new product line so different?
A.: Well, it’s a mixture of factors. As a user, I really appreciate the completely revamped design and modern Vista look. The controls are more convenient and intuitive, using three-button principle; nobody’s going to get lost. The product works for both novice and sophisticated users. From the technological point of view, the brand new OSS incorporates a huge number of improvements and opportunities for further upgrades – all thanks to the new flexible architecture. And, of course, OSS 2008 is full of new features - site blacklisting, auto-learn, Fast User Switching support, web control – just to mention a few.
Q.: A provocative question: what would you choose as a regular PC user - OFP or OSS 2008?
A.: Oh, yes, you marketing guys love asking tricky questions! This may sound evasive, but I’m not going to be drawn into making a recommendation here. It’s up to the users to decide whether they need one all-inclusive solution or a set of security products from different vendors, including Agnitum and our firewall. I use Outpost Security Suite Pro and I’m quite happy with it. Just because I trust what I’m doing. As a computer geek, I used to experiment with a combination of third-party products (antispyware, antivirus, antispam): frankly speaking, I got more performance-related problems and compatibility issues than benefits. But, this might be different for other people.
Q.: Thanks Alexey, now we marketing types have to get back to work.
A.: Me too. Cheers!
