Windows registry is an universal storage of system settings and software configurations. Altering its contents can lead to software and system errors and faults. Malicious processes slightly modify registry elements thus allowing untrusted processes unlimited network access or inject their components into trusted applications like Windows Explorer despite the security software presence.

Direct registry access technology is used to save a copy of registry or restore its untouched state and to set privileges to different hives.

Direct access control allows to prevent malicious software from gaining it. An extended registry functions protection mechanism allows to prevent:

  • - user data theft by low-level commands (e.g. LoadKey, LoadKey2)
  • - rewriting the objects using read operations (reading the big hive), objects modification and further writing of the modified hive.
  • - setting an incorrect set of access rights for certain registry objects which does not differ from deleting the object.
