The LNK vulnerability is a security hole in all versions of Windows from XP SP2 to Windows 7. Malicious code can be executed when the icon of a specially crafted shortcut is displayed. The shortcuts are identified by the ".lnk" extension. The exploit appears to distribute itself via USB devices, network shares and WebDAV.
The consistency and validity algorithm implemented in Outpost 7.0.2 to check for .lnk files appears to us to be the only viable way to prevent such infections. In this version we have incorporated block and alert mechanisms for around 20 LNK validators in Outpost solutions. Please, note that you need to turn on real-time protection of Anti-Malware (Anti-Spyware) module to be protected. Aside from these changes, Outpost's signature-based and heuristic monitors have also been updated to expose .lnk exploits.
Install Outpost 7.0.2 to be protected from .lnk exploits. We recommend to remove the previous version of Outpost before installation.
